Stable roof construction and long dream of attic – Mission Impossible?

The most efficient roof structure type is timber trusses since timber trusses are a cost-effective solution. With additional financial and quality aspects, timber truss surprises with its simple installation. However, before thinking about roof structure, it is necessary to predict what purpose the trusses will be used for in order to be able to adapt the timber truss for the functional needs of the design and manufacturing process.

Favorite types of attic construction

Often the attic is left unused and uninhabited, thinking that the space between the roof and the ceiling of the building is impractical and non-functional. However, there are various ways to make the attic, both practical and functional, with a relatively small financial contribution, increasing the living space of the building and adding value to the roof space.

The most common uses for attic area:

In large families, the attic can be so used creating a well-equipped recreation or play area for children and teenagers. For welcoming people, the attic can be a room for planning an extra living room – because everyone knows that nothing can be better than a comfortable rest.

How can timber trusses serve to create long-loved attic?

Over time, steep roof structures have become increasingly popular, which undoubtedly offers more possibilities for the construction of the attic. It is therefore very important to plan the purpose of the attic before the building is in construction so that during the design of the roof, the roof trusses can be adapted to the specific needs of the building, allowing for a wide variety of architectural possibilities.

Choosing not to construct attic, the cost of production of timber trusses may decrease, but the roofs living space and functionality will be lost. If the attic zone is planned to be up to 7 meters and space functionality and it is planned as a small storage space in which to place seasonal equipment or archives, then a more suitable solution would be a roof structure with a smaller inclination, which also does not require additional load bearing or supporting walls. However, if the total weight of the stored value is not given in advance, timber trusses may be overloaded.

In turn, if the purpose is to increase the area of use of the attic zone, increasing the span of more than 7 meters, the project should also include the construction of a supporting wall under the truss, which will enable the extension of the attic living area without losing the durability of timber trusses. When it comes to safety considerations, it is important to remember that changing the attic zone to living requirements requires a variable load of 250 kg / m2. Conversely, if space is intended only for small warehouse requirements, then the variable load should be from 100 kg / m2 to 150 kg / m2.
